Long Day: Mets Lose To Marlins 2-1 In 20 Innings

NEW YORK (AP)   A typical loss is tough enough. Coming up short after 20 innings and 61/2 hours, now that really stings.

In the longest major league game in more than three years, Adeiny Hechavarria hit an RBI single in the 20th inning and the Miami Marlins outlasted the New York Mets 2-1 on Saturday, well after Matt Harvey left with lower back tightness following another stingy start.

Inept at the plate as day turned to night, the Mets went 0 for 19 with runners in scoring position, a team record. They stranded 22 on the bases.

“I wish I had an explanation,” manager Terry Collins said. “I wish I could give you all the philosophies that we talk about. We try to go through them: Productive outs, moving runners along, using the field to hit, all the things that you preach and preach and preach…
